Sandstone Titan

Sandstone Titan

The Sandstone Titan is the boss of the Ancient Ruins.

The Realm Eye says:
The colossal terracotta golem residing within the desert’s ruins is the single greatest artifact of what used to take place within that shrine.
It serves as a vessel for spirits to freely interact with our mortal world. In essence, a very unrefined version of the practices that took place within the Lost Halls.
While its original purpose during the shrine’s proper history is unclear, it would seem the spirits do not desire the events from the ruin’s past to be repeated.

Behavior

The Sandstone Titan is initially found dormant in a square room within the Ancient Ruins, surrounded by nine passive Ancient Spirits. Once approached, it will absorb the Spirits, awaken, and begin combat.

The Titan’s boss room has two different variants: one with a central platform made of greyish stone tiles, and another with lighter tiles and hardened sand in the center. Despite the differences, the type of boss room has no visible effect on the Sandstone Titan’s behavior.

Every time the Sandstone Titan enters its next full phase (Phase 1/2/3), its shots will decrease in damage as it weakens.

Spirit Phases

Once the Titan has been brought to 50% HP for the first time, it will go invulnerable, move into the center of the arena and spawn in nine Ancient Spirits, which orbit it while releasing Silencing AoE bursts. The fight will progress at a rate depending on how many Ancient Spirits are killed, with the attacks the Titan uses depending on how many Spirits it currently has alive.

  • If the time limit (which starts at ~12 seconds and seems to accelerate depending on the number of Ancient Spirits killed in that Spirit Phase) fully passes or the maximum kill count has been met (see below), the Titan will absorb all remaining Spirits, become vulnerable, and start the appropriate phase. After a Spirit Phase, the Titan’s HP will be set to 10% + (10% per spirit remaining), meaning that it can either recover or lose HP depending on how efficient the destruction of the Ancient Spirits is.
    • There is a limit on how many Spirits can be killed in one Spirit Phase. The specific limit is currenlty unknown, but it is enough that one cannot skip the next phase entirely (eg. during any Phase 1 attack, one cannot skip past 2C, and during any Phase 2 attack, one cannot skip past 3C). If the maximum number of spirits are killed, the Titan will pre-emptively absorb the remainder and start the next appropriate attack.
    • The Titan will repeat Spirit Phases at certain HP intervals, which depend on how many Ancient Spirits it still has. For every Spirit that is missing, the HP threshold to push it into its next Spirit Phase will be lowered by 5% from the initial 50%.
    • Spirits will retain any damage taken each time they respawn, and any Spirits that are killed will not return, meaning the number of Ancient Spirits in each Spirit Phase will decrease as the fight goes on.
  • If the time limit passes and no Spirits have been killed at all, the Titan will reabsorb them and repeat the phase in full. This will also permanently Expose the Titan until a spirit is successfully killed to compensate for a percieved lack of DPS.
    • If this occurs in the Spirit Phase following Phase 1A, the Titan will not repeat 1A, instead throwing out a Sand Bomb before restarting the Spirit Phase.

Phase 1

1A (9 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan chases players, firing rings of Exposing lightning bolts along with aimed spreads of crescent-shaped bashes. It will periodically throw out boulders which spawn invincible “Sand Bombs” that resemble earthen spikes - these enemies will land in an explosion of arrowhead-like bullets before moving around erratically for a few seconds, turning solid tiles into Quicksand. The Titan must be brought to 50% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

1B (8 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan backs away from players, firing 3-way bursts of slowing boomerang spinners and pairs of arrows. This attack will only be used if the player fails to kill all the required spirits in time (see below). The Titan must be brought to 45% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

1C (7 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan chases players, firing spreads of arrows, rings of lightning bolts, and thrown Silencing Bombs. The Titan must be brought to 40% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

Phase 2

2A (6 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan circles around the room, firing a two-way spiral of lightning bolts alongside aimed spreads of boomerang spinners that Slow. It will continue throwing out Sand Bombs during this phase. The Titan must be brought to 35% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

2B (5 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan circles in place and wanders the room, firing dense rings of shots. These rings are composed of both golden arrows that inflict Bleed and boomerang spinners that inflict Slow. The Titan must be brought to 30% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

2C (4 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan circles the room, firing rings of lightning bolts, aimed pairs of bashes, and aimed Silence bombs. The Titan must be brought to 25% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

Phase 3

3A (3 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan chases players while firing dense spreads of golden arrows, while throwing out Sand Bombs. The Titan must be brought to 20% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

3B (2 Spirits Remaining)

The Titan travels back and forth along the horizontal axis of the room, firing rings of slowing boomerang spinners along with single aimed bashes. The Titan must be brought to 15% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

3C (1 Spirit Remaining)

The Titan remains still and fires rings of golden arrows. The Titan must be brought to 10% HP to force a Spirit Phase.

Death

Once it has no more spirits left, the Titan will fully deactivate - becoming harmless, Armor Broken, and immobilized. At this point, it is ready to be finished off.

Tips and Strategies

  • Since the perimeter of the arena has blocks, the Sandstone Titan can chase you while you attack it. Since the quicksand “bug” was introduced, it will be much harder to reach the edges of the arena.
  • Since the Sandstone Titan chases you, you can circle around the ground in the center of the room while you attack him.
